Why build a custom booking engine instead of using the one bundled with our PMS?
Bundled engines are adequate when your rates are simple and your conversion is acceptable. They become limiting in three cases: your product does not fit a room-night form, such as multi-unit villas, packages with activities, or long-stay pricing; you need the booking flow to match a brand experience the vendor template cannot express; or you have measured conversion loss at a specific step and the vendor will not change it. If none of these apply, keep the bundled engine and invest the budget in traffic instead.
How much does a booking engine improve direct bookings versus OTAs?
We do not publish a promised number, because the honest answer depends on your existing direct traffic, your rate parity position, and your brand recognition. A better engine converts the traffic you already have more efficiently; it does not create demand. If most of your demand originates on OTA marketplaces, a booking engine alone will not move the channel mix, and we will say so before you commit budget.
What integration does a booking engine require?
At minimum a live availability and rate source, which is either your PMS directly or your channel manager, and a payment provider for deposits or full prepayment. Commonly also a CRM or email platform for confirmations and pre-arrival messaging, an analytics stack for funnel measurement, and a reviews or content source for the property pages. The availability integration is the one that determines feasibility, so we validate its real API behavior first.
How do you prevent showing availability that no longer exists?
Live availability calls against the source of truth wherever the API allows it, with a short cached fallback only for search results, never for the final booking write. The booking write is confirmed against live inventory before payment is captured, so a guest cannot pay for a room that has been sold. Where a channel manager only supports periodic sync, that interval becomes a disclosed risk rather than a hidden one.
Should the booking engine be mobile-first?
Yes, in most markets a majority of accommodation searches now start on a phone, and mobile conversion is where most engines lose bookings. The date picker, room comparison, and payment step are the three places where mobile drop-off concentrates. We design and test those three flows on real devices rather than in a desktop browser at a narrow width.
Can you handle rate plans, packages, and promotional codes?
Yes, and this is usually the most detailed part of the specification. Rate plans with occupancy and length-of-stay conditions, seasonal pricing, non-refundable versus flexible variants, packages that bundle rooms with meals or activities, corporate and negotiated rates behind an access code, and promotional codes with usage limits all need explicit modelling. Retrofitting them after launch typically means rebuilding the pricing layer.
How do you approach conversion optimization?
We instrument the funnel before optimizing it: search, results, room selection, guest details, payment, confirmation, each with drop-off measurement. Then we test changes against measured behavior rather than opinion. Common wins are reducing required form fields, showing total price including taxes early, making the cancellation policy legible before payment, and removing steps rather than adding persuasion.
Do you support multiple currencies and languages?
Yes. Multi-currency needs a decision about whether you display converted prices and settle in your base currency, or actually charge in the guest's currency, which affects your payment provider setup and your reconciliation. Multi-language needs translated content, locale-correct date and number formats, and right-to-left support where relevant. Both are cheaper to build in from the start than to add later.
How long does a booking engine project take?
A focused engine with one availability integration, one payment provider, and a defined rate model typically reaches production in three to five months. Complex package configuration, multi-property search, or multiple currency and language markets extend that. The availability integration and the rate model, not the interface, drive the timeline.
What engagement models are available?
We offer a Dedicated Development Team for continuous product work and Staff Augmentation to extend an existing in-house team. Share your requirements and we prepare a tailored proposal within 48 hours, including team composition, timeline, and cost estimate.
